You have not grown, if you have not own!
July 12, 2022Namaste! Welcome to 'A piece of my Learning'. The title says, 'You have not grown if you have not own.' Now, what does this mean? I am not talking about owning a house, a car, or a business. I am talking about taking ownership of something. Now what does taking ownership means precisely. Let me share a small story to explain it.
There are two friends, Shaam and Sundar living in a small town. They both have a dream as children to create their name in the world. As they complete their education, they both start working in a company together at a junior most post.
A few years pass away. In a few years, Shaam becomes a CEO of a multi-million dollar company and Sundar is working in the same company in a managerial post. They both happen to meet each other after all these years in their hometown. Sundar is proud yet envious of Shaam since he achieved so much in life.
Sundar asks Shaam, "Shaam, How did you become the CEO of such a big company and I am still working as a manager when we both had the same dream and almost similar skills?"
Shaam says, “Yes. You are correct my friend. We did start with the same dream and similar skills. But there was one more quality which I had."
Curious to know, Sundar asks, "Which quality would that be?"
Shaam - "Do you remember that incident? We both were working late on a project one day. We left for home almost at midnight and it started raining like cats and dogs all of a sudden?"
Sundar - "I remember it. We stopped under a tree for a while halfway to our houses. I think we had forgotten to switch off the lights in the office which we remembered then. But what about that incidence? I remember going home after that and sleeping like a log after all that work."
Shaam - "Correct! But, I did not go home after that. When we left from under the tree, I went back to the office. I switched off all the lights, locked the door properly, and then came home. I got drenched in the rain but I still did that. I was working as an owner back then and I still am. I guess this helped me get where I am today."
Sundar realized what he was lacking all along. He looked at the work as an employee and never as an owner. He decided to take ownership on that day and turn his life around.
Ownership is a crucial quality to grow
Ownership simply means taking initiative to bring along positive results. It is about caring for the results like an owner would do. This story made me realize that I must always take ownership of everything I do. It could be as small as making my bed in the morning to as big as keeping up with my promises. If I do not take ownership of things important to me, I could never grow in life.
