A tiger or a wolf?
December 31, 2022Namaste and welcome to my blog and podcast channel – ‘A piece of my learning’
The year 2023 is dawning. In these last few days, everyone is taking time to introspect and ways to improve and grow in the new year. As I was making a vision board for 2023 and thinking about it, I came across a story that I want to share with you all.
There was a small town in which lived a boy. Even though he was well-endowed in his teenage years, he was very lazy. He lived in a small room and used to steal food to survive. ‘I am going with the flow’ he would often say. Why should I put effort if it is not a life or death situation? On one of these occasions, he was trying to steal the food when the shop vendor saw him. The boy dropped the food and started running to save himself from a beating.
He did not realize it when he crossed the town and ran to a nearby forest to save himself. While walking in the forest, he came across a small part of the forest with no trees. A perfect kill spot since there were so many vantage points. In the middle of that land, he saw a wolf limping as it seemed to be missing one leg. The boy felt bad for the wolf and tried to shoo him away from that spot. The boy feared that if the gaze of any other predator fell on this poor wolf, it will surely die. On top of that, the wolf was looking weak. Probably it hadn’t eaten in a few days.
The boy started thinking about how to save the wolf. He saw a tiger walking toward the wolf with a piece of meat captured firmly in his jaws. The boy got disheartened because now the wolf was about to die. To the boy’s astonishment, the tiger dropped the piece of meat near the wolf and walked away.
The boy looked at the sky and said, ‘Oh God! You always have miracles to take care of your creations.’
As he continued wondering about this, he decided to test it. He sat at the base of a very old tree waiting for someone to give him food. Almost 2-3 days passed, but no animal or human offered him any food. Disheartened by this, the boy started walking towards the town, ready to take the beating.
While walking towards the town, the boy came across a wise sage. The sage asked the boy, ‘You look disheartened. What happened? Can I help you in any way?’
The boy narrated the whole incident to the sage and in a low voice said, ‘God only loves other animals, He did not send anyone to help me. I would have died of hunger, had I stayed there even a day more.’
The sage listened to the boy very carefully and then asked him, ‘So, do you have any physical injury?’
The boy said, ‘What? No! I am fit and fine.’
Sage: Okay. Do you have any situation in life that is stopping you from working for food?
Boy: No
Sage: Then I think you took a wrong learning from what you saw.
Boy: What do you mean?
Sage: God does not want you to be the wolf. He wants you to be the tiger. You are well-endowed, physically fit, and mentally strong. There is not a single thing that can stop you from working hard and earning the food which can help you survive. Not only that, you can work some more and give a portion of it to someone at a disadvantage at this point in life. You can become like that tiger who did the hunting himself yet saved a portion of meat for the disabled wolf.
Just like in the story, in our life, we all are waiting for things to happen magically. Everyone wishes that their bank balance should grow the next year. But very few go that extra mile and share a portion of what they have earned to help people at a disadvantage.
No matter how small a contribution you could make, I would like to request you all to donate a portion of your income to your favorite charity. In the community I work with, we all share a giving attitude. I recently donated to a local charity that helps to educate young kids with autism. Mazavyapar also has a tie-up with a charity that helps children born with type 1 diabetes. I will leave the link in the comment section if you want to take a look.
As we listened to the story, I think we must aspire to become that tiger in life and truly understand what God wants to show us.
Thank you and see you in the new year with more content and learnings.
Just like this one, there are a lot of stories that transform our lives. We can learn so much from similar short stories. I am improving my storytelling skills with MazaVyapar’s storytelling club. You can listen to many such stories on the youtube channel of mazavyapar
