The Mentor - II

Namaste! Welcome to 'A piece of my learnings'
Thank you for waiting for the second part of the blog and
podcast. If you did not read or listen to my previous post, please do that so
you can understand the story better. You can read it here - The Mentor - I
So let us continue with what happens next.
The worker would take a day off and usually the situation would improve to his satisfaction. He thinks that he has found the secret to success. So he starts doing the same thing again and again without even counseling his mentor after that. But one day when he returns to the company expecting a hike he receives a termination letter. He is shocked by this news. He realizes he made a mistake. Unable to understand what went wrong, he goes to his mentor seeking help.
He asks his mentor with a hurt pride, “Why did I lose my job? Did I not do everything exactly as you instructed?”
The mentor replies, “Actually, you did not. You listened to only half of it. You understood right away that no one pays any attention to a light bulb that is always ON. It is only when it goes off that people suddenly take notice and realize they have been taking it for granted. You were so eager to implementing those learnings that you did not come back to understand the second part.”
The worker then realizes that he had made a big mistake as he asks, “Second half? What was the second half?”
The mentor says in an emphatic manner, “The second half, that is more important that the first, is the realization that if a light bulb goes off frequently, then it will be replaced eventually with a reliable one. Who would even want a light bulb that no one could count on to provide illumination?”
This story taught me three crucial things.
The first one is the importance of a mentor. You must find a mentor who has already traveled the journey you are setting upon. So that whenever you have highs and lows in the journey, they have an exact solution to your problems. Even if they do not have a solution for some reason, they will prevent you from repeating their mistakes. But, as a student, you must always understand the complete learning and not cherry pick some things that you agree with. If you can learn to be a good follower today, then you can become a great leader tomorrow.
Find a mentor and learn to become a good student.
The second one is the importance of people. In your life, do you have friends and family member that you take for granted? They are there for you in your highs and lows. What if one day they are suddenly not there in your life? Do not wait for such a day to suddenly realize how important they were to you. Be grateful and thankful to them today.
Do not take your close ones for granted
In this thanksgiving week, I want to thank all my friends and family members for sticking by me in my happy and sad times. I am really grateful to you for being a part of my life. Love you all.
The third one is do not let people take you for granted either. You must stop complaining, talk less and focus on doing things. Do not stop doing things just because they are not going according to your plan. Remember, ‘doing is learning’.
