The Mentor - I

Namaste! Welcome to 'A piece of my learnings'
I have been working with a mentor past couple of years and the growth I see within myself is tremendous. Everything from my mindset to my actions has been transformed and I would like to give all the credit to my mentor. I am one of the difficult students in a couple of aspects. But I have learned one important lesson and that is
If someone is trying to teach me something, I must learn it as a whole and not ignore the bits and pieces of it according to my convenience.
I came across this one interesting story recently that I want to share with you all in the hope that this lesson can reach you and help you become a better student.
There is this one worker who gets hired by a company. He is a very hardworking person. His mentor who is an older technician helps him develop his skills. The worker practices very hard and tries to master every skill his mentor teaches.
The older technician eventually retires but the worker is still working in the same position in the company. A couple of months passes and there is no growth for him in the company. Unable to understand this situation, he goes to meet his mentor.
He asks his mentor, “Even though I have mastered all the skills, why does the company not recognize my talent and give me a raise?”
The mentor smiles and replies, “I have a suggestion. Do this thing and then come meet me the day after. What you have to do is simply call in sick and take a day off tomorrow. Understood?”
The worker says, “But I am not sick.”
The mentor says, “Still. Take a day off. Make whatever reason you have to.”
The worker is confused. But he decides to listen to his mentor. He takes the day off and calls in sick.
When he goes to the company the next day, the manager calls him into his cabin. He gets scared thinking his lie has been caught. But he is stunned after listening to his manager’s response.
The manager says, “Congratulations! You are a very important part of this company. Your skills are unparalleled and we value you a lot. So here is a performance bonus and you will also receive a salary hike starting next month."
When the worker enquires about the reason for the bonus and salary hike, the manager replies, “You were sick yesterday and took the day off. Nothing went as it was supposed to. A lot of our workers faced difficulties. These issues would never come up otherwise because you are adept at solving them. We were able to realize how important your skills and contributions are to the company.”
The worker is delighted with this. He goes home and celebrates with his family and forgets to visit his mentor. A couple of days pass and everything is going very well for him now. He starts repeating the same thing anytime he feels undervalued in the company. He would take a day off and the next day he would get the desired outcome. A few months pass as he repeats this and one day when he returns to the company expecting a hike he receives a termination letter. He is shocked by this news. He suddenly remembers his mentor.
What does the mentor say to him that gives him a lesson for life? Stay tuned and you will know about it in the next blog.
