| Victory of lord Krishna over Narkasur |
Namaste and welcome to 'A piece of my learning.' In India, we celebrate Diwali with great pomp and show. Some regions of India celebrate Diwali for five days, while some regions celebrate for six days. I am sure you all know that Diwali represents the victory of good over evil. In today's blog, I want to talk about the story behind one of the days of Diwali called 'Narak Chaturdashi' or 'Choti Diwali' and what I learned from it.
Narakasur, son of Bhudevi was a mythical asura king. Bhudevi, the earth, sought the boon from Lord Vishnu that his son would be all-powerful and lead a long life. Lord Vishnu granted the boons. Narakasur was aware of these boons and his ego knew no bounds. He became the evil king of Pragjyotishapur He conquered all three worlds and enslaved around 16,100 queens, princesses, and women, and humiliated the Devas. Everyone was afraid of his terror.
At one point, he went on to harass the Devas and also humiliated the mother of Devas, Aditi, by snatching her earrings. Lord Indra sought Lord Krishna's help to put an end to Narkasur’s atrocities. Lord Krishna and Devi Satyabhama mounted on Garuda and set out to kill Narkasur. After a battle of a couple of days, lord Krishna got victory over Narkasur and rescued all the women who went on to become lord Krishna's wives.
People commemorate the victory of lord Krishna on this day and it came to be known as Narak Chaturdashi. You must have heard this story in your childhood but I had a different realization when I heard it again recently.
'Ego' is one of the commandments we attain at some point in life. It could be because of the number of academic degrees we hold, or the skills we have developed over the period of time in our professional careers. Then we start feeling superior to everyone else around us. We get the feeling that nobody can teach us anything better. This ego could be the beginning of our downfall.
We never realize when we fall prey to this commandment and become arrogant because of that. Ego may wear a different cloak for each one of us. That makes it the hardest thing to identify within us. But in order to find myself, I must shed the cloak of ego. Ego makes us think that whatever we have achieved in life, we are the sole person responsible for it. When we shed the ego, we realize that even if we have put in hard work, our success would not have been possible without the countless sacrifices and efforts of the people around us.
I was fortunate enough to listen to one of the successful entrepreneurs speak about ego. One learning that stick with me was
'When I let go of this ego, I will become a new person. That will be the victory of light over darkness for me. That will be the real Diwali for me.'
I would definitely like to pass along this learning to all the people reading this blog or listening to this podcast. Let go of the ego and celebrate the real Diwali. Wishing you all a very 'Happy Diwali'.
