Is being successful a zero-sum game?
June 21, 2022
Namaste! Welcome to my blog. I want to talk about something I had a massive realization recently. What is that? Zero-sum game!
Now, some of you don't know what a zero sum game is. Let me explain that first. Zero sum game means a situation in which one person or group can win something only by causing another person or group to lose it. In simpler terms, if there exist two sides, the result is an advantage to one side and equivalent loss to other side.
Let us see two scenarios to understand a zero sum and a non zero sum concept in a better way. Let's consider two people, person A is a seller of a product or a service and person B is a consumer or customer of that product or service.
Scenario 1: The person A sells a faulty product to person B. In this scenario, the gain of person A is equivalent to loss of person B. If we think about the emotions in this scenario, person A is happy because the product was sold or offloaded. But person B is sad for not receiving the equivalent worth for the currency. This made it a zero sum game.
Scenario 2: The person A sells an excellent quality of product or delivers an excellent quality of service to person B. Person A got the money for the product or service. So person A is happy. Person B gained satisfaction because of receiving excellent product or service. If we think about the emotions in this scenario, both the people are happy which is why it is a non zero sum.
So what was the difference in both these scenarios? In scenario 2, person A decided to sell excellent product instead of doing an unethical thing of offloading a faulty product. That's it.
Similarly, if we can give 100% efforts and do the right things, everyone can benefit from it. Being successful is no different. I have seen a lot of people NOT willing to guide others towards the level of success they are at. They assume that if someone else succeeds, they lose. But my success does not have to come at the cost of someone else's failure. If I have achieved even a slightest level of success and I help few people do the same, everyone could be happy.
Let's help each and grow together and succeed. Success is not a zero-sum game.
