Happiness is a result of your perception
July 05, 2022 Namaste! Welcome to 'A piece of my Learning' As they say, another day, another learning. Recently I was having an interesting conversation with a friend of mine. Does happiness come from the work you do or how you perceive the work you do?
I happen to remember a story when we were discussing this. There is a Saint who is traveling through the country to understand human nature. He notices something interesting as he passes by a construction site. He notices three masons working there. As the Saint carefully observes them, he realizes the different emotions on their faces. One mason is almost on the verge of crying, one is in contentment, and one has a wide smile on his face as he is singing while doing his chore.
Looking at these mixed emotions, the Saint becomes curious. The Saint approaches the masons individually.
First, the saint goes to the first Mason who is on the verge of crying. Very calmly the Saint asks, "How is work?" You know the way we ask each other on a call right? same way. The Mason starts his blabbering. "You know I hate my work. They make us work in the heat. I am hungry and I am stuck with this stupid work. It always happens to me. I end up with such type of work."
After consoling the Mason a bit, the Saint goes to the second Mason and asks the same thing in the same tone. The Mason replies, "Well, work is alright. I mean I know there is so much heat outside. But the money I will earn from this work will feed my family. I got no complaints. I will be happy to work here as long as my family is getting fed."
Impressed by the answer, the Saint goes to the third Mason who is happily singing while working. The Saint asks him the same again.
The Mason replies, "Do you know what we are constructing. A temple. Out of so many masons out there, I was among the lucky ones chosen to do God's work. What more can I ask for."
The Saint then understands some things. Even though all of them are doing the same work under the same conditions, the way each one of them looks at their work is different. It is because they have different perceptions, that they are showing different emotions.
Happiness depends on how you perceive what you do!
What have been your experiences? Do you think, that if you perceived your work differently, you would be happier in life?
