Shyamprasad ki kahani

September 06, 2022

We all have one friend who asks unnecessary questions or enquires about all the unimportant stuff. Even though we love that friend from our hearts, we often get irritated by this habit of theirs. Namaste! and welcome to 'A piece of my learnings' where I talk about one such person.

Let us call this character Shyamprasad. Shyamprasad is a very hardworking fellow. He does have this unique character trait of paying extra attention to unnecessary stuff. He is working in a company in a village. He is  making enough to make ends meet and send some money to his family living in another remote village. It has been 3 years since Shyamprasad visited his family. Being poor, he is not able to take even 2 weeks of holiday to visit his family.

One day he gets his golden chance. The company head calls him into her cabin.

She says, "Shyamprasad we are impressed by your work. We want to send you to a city to get us this business deal."

Shyamprasad is excited and nervous. He tells his company head,
"Errr... Ma'am, I also wanted to take a few days off to visit my family."

The company head thinks for a while and says,
"You can do this thing. We have only one train that departs and arrives in our village. You can take the train tomorrow. Your village is just miles away from the city you are going to. The deal will be done in a few minutes. You will have to wait for a week to catch the train back. You can visit your family meanwhile. You will also get to meet your family and you won't have to take a single day off as well since it is a company trip. How does it sound?"

Shyamprasad is elated. He thanks his stars, and his company head, and gets ready for his trip.

In excitement, he reaches the train station 2 hours early. What to do while waiting for his train? So Shyamprasad decides to check his weight. He takes out a coin and puts it in one of the weighing machines we see at the railway station.

The machine prints,
'Shyamprasad is your name, 9 am is your train, 65Kgs is your weight.'
"How did the weighing machine know my name? There must be someone pulling this prank."

He then again puts a coin in the machine and faces the opposite direction of the machine.
The machine prints,
'Shyamprasad is your name, 9 am is your train, 65Kgs is your weight.'

"What? Again? How can someone still know it's me?"
This time he goes to the washroom, messes up his hair, tears out his shirt, puts a muffler around his face, and checks the weight again.

The machine prints,
'Shyamprasad is your name, 9 am is your train, 65Kgs is your weight.'

"No! No! No! This can't be happening. Now I want to beat this machine anyhow. I want to know how someone is doing it."

He goes out of the railway station. He sees a puddle of dirt. He goes there and just starts rolling in the puddle. He bites his lips so that blood starts coming from his lips. He tears apart his shirt. He then messes up his hair pretty badly. He thinks to himself - "There is no way in the world the machine could recognize me. Even I cannot recognize myself."

In this state, he goes back to the machine and inserts the coin into the machine.
The machine prints,
'Shyamprasad is your name, 9 am was your train, 65Kgs is your weight.'

He wells up as he realizes he missed his train and the God-gifted chance to spend time with his family over something so silly.

The moral of the story is we must focus on the things we set out to do. Distractions will come. It is up to us to decide how much energy and attention we must put into unnecessary stuff.
