The Wheel of Life
September 30, 2023A few weeks ago, I posted a blog article about How to achieve work-life balance? If you have not read it, you can read it by clicking the title before proceeding through this blog. Thank you to all of you who read and responded to that blog. A lot of readers were interested in understanding this in a bit of depth and my experience trying to achieve that balance. When we talk about balancing just work and life, it is an excerpt taken from a bigger concept. Namaste and welcome to 'A piece of my learning'. In this blog, I want to talk about the broader concept called the wheel of life.
The exercise
In order to understand this, you have to do this exercise as you read this blog. Just grab a pen and a paper and you should be ready for this exercise. Are you ready?
Draw a wheel on the paper. Write down 8 or more things that are most important to you in your life around that wheel as shown below.
The next thing is the crucial part. You have to give yourself score on these categories out of 10. Nobody is watching, so you can be honest about it. Take as much time as you need to think and score. Once you have all the scores, just join the points and you have a clarity on where you currently stand in life.
The observations
In order to show you how it works, I will share mine when from when I first made this.

This 'wheel of life' made me realize a lot of things. As you can see from this chart, my life was an amoeba, far from being a balanced one. I was prioritizing my career and work at the expense of lot of things. I was giving less time and priority to so many other areas of my life which are important to me. I am sure you are having a few realizations of your own after watching your wheel of life.
The solution
Now, you can think and marinate yourself in those realizations or you can read further about the solution to achieve this balanced life. In front of each category that you have mentioned above, I want you to write one action that you will take for next few months in order to bring back that balance. Here are some examples of actions you can take.
Health: Exercise everyday for 30 mins.
Friends: Call or meet 1 friend every day/week.
Family: Eat dinner with the family without getting distracted by work or other things.
Recreation: Pick a long lost or a new hobby and spend 15 mins everyday on it.
Spirituality: Meditate and pray everyday.
Career: Prioritize urgent and critical tasks and delegate non-critical and non-urgent tasks.
Finance: Create and implement a money management technique.
Personal Growth: Give 30 mins every week and 10% of income on education and upgrading skills.
These are just a few example actions based on my categories. You can define your own actions. A plan of action or a road map is necessary but implementation is key. A lot of you will do this second task of writing down actions or game plan for the next 3/6/12 months, but only a few of you will consistently take those actions. I would like to offer my helping hand here to those who have that realization but are getting stuck at the implementation part.
